What is a Temperature Controller?

As the name suggests, a temperature controller is an instrument for controlling temperature. The temperature controller takes input from a temperature sensor, and has an output that is connected to a control element, such as a heater or fan.

To control the process temperature precisely without extensive operator intervention, the temperature control system relies on a controller that accepts a temperature sensor as an input such as a thermocouple or RTD. It compares the actual temperature to the desired control temperature, or setpoint, and provides an output to a control element. The temperature controller is a part of the complete control system, and the whole system should be analyzed when selecting the corresponding temperature controller.
